SIZZLING SUMMER AND MAYFAIR ART WEEKEND: PART ONE.
24th March, 2019
Well, enjoying developing work in the sunshine of a hot summer, I noticed that Mayfair Art weekend was coming up. Joining the RA in celebrating 250 years of the Royal Academy, the galleries stayed open late all weekend and also put on talks, gallery tours and even refreshments for the public.
There are many galleries in Mayfair, so I made a short list of exhibitons that looked interesting. The first exhibiton I visited was at the John Martin Gallery in Albermarle Street. Here was the beautiful work of the Irish artist called Martin Finnin who lives and works in Cork. The exhibiton did not disappoint. There is a purity to his work that is enriching and the colours are so alive they are almost singing. The paintings were quite large and full of thoughtful abstract shapes set against vibrant backdrops. The artist was present in the gallery and so I had the pleasure of talking to him. The gallery also convinced me to buy his book, and Martin kindly signed a Thank You on the inside cover. He often works abroad and was preparing to go to Berlin. He has also worked in studios in Italy and in India and other places.
Wandering around the exhibiton one more time, I felt really glad to have come to this gallery and see his work. I found it a joy to experience the thoughtful and clever exploitation of colour.
Feeling suitably uplifted by this experience, I set off for my next destination, the Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. Read the next installment in PART TWO.
